We're on verge of having a potential snowfall great enough to open our trails (FINALLY!). There's a few topics we need to remind everyone about to make sure we remain safe this winter.
First, I received a courtesy call from our friends at the DEC Parks police this week. They wanted to remind us all that they will be patrolling the trails again this winter. They will be looking for the typical things like loud exhaust, drinking and riding, reckless operation, and registration and insurance. An emphasis will be placed on registration number sticker placement this year. No more warnings for stickers on the tunnel. It has been three years of warnings, now parks wants to make sure everyone conforms to the law. It is what it is, so I'd suggest everyone makes sure the sticker is on the cowl as required or expect a $200 fine. You can get a new registration plate at the DMV for free.
If you head down to the Great Sacandaga be aware that the Batchelorville Bridge is being replaced. There is ongoing work on pilings this winter. This will result in open water around the bridge. DOT has expressed that the safe passage area will be along the north shore. They have put out a flyer which you can review at http://ilsnow.com/board/viewto…..amp;t=7146 or http://mulleyvilletrailsystem……bridge.jpg
Speaking of GSL, recent reports say that the Turner Road trailhead is not yet safe. There is ice there but it just recently froze over. It is recommended to take the Richter's trail (C8) to the lake. However the Sacandaga Snowmobile Club has informed us that there is active logging on the Richter's trail. Just be cautious as you ride it as there will be trucks and skidders in the area. It is open though. Sacandaga Club updated us that Richters trail is now CLOSED. Turner Road trail still has unsafe ice. If you go that way stay on the shore line.
The logging operation in Mulleyville is going in full force right now. That means the closures we communicated earlier still stand. In addition the C8 trail from the Sacandaga intersection to Ormsbee road will also be closed. See the closure map on http://mulleyvilletrailsystem……/trail-map .
We are having our annual Lake Desolation Bonfire on Saturday 1/15/11, starting at 2:00pm. Tinney's will open at 12pm on that day. Same rules as before. No open containers on Tinney's property, and no items bought at Tinney's can be taken past the deck. We will be selling 100 club tickets, 50/50, and apparel. Come out and enjoy it, we will hold it regardless of snow conditions.
The South Warren club is holding a snowmobile safety course for the youngsters and anyone else who'd like to attend on on 1/21 and 1/22. For more info call Lenny Fornabia at nysledsfornabia@yahoo.com
Finally a reminder about our 100 club. For the $100 ticket you buy entry into 5 separate drawings for $1000. Only 100 tickets will be sold so the odds of winning are very high. The drawings will occur at the February – April Meetings along with 2 additional special events. We need everyone's support to make this a successful fundraiser and win some money. Check the website for more details or contact any of the club officers.
Looking forward to a safe winter.
Steve
