Trail Reports

Wednesday After the Storm

We got about 20″ of heavy snow out of Round 1.  Round 2 looks promising for another 8-12″.  Trails have all been groomed once but are still going to be pretty soft due to the warm temperatures.  Please go easy on the trails as mashed potato snow bumps up very easy.  I fully expect to see some monster bumps at some points this weekend.  We will do our best to keep up but how fast the snow is coming, the expected high traffic, and temperatures could be tough on them.  One thing is for sure, we don’t have low snow conditions anymore.

please ride wide and don’t cow path trails as you break them.  This will improve the groomers ability to pack it down and improve safety by widening the trails.  Stay right, and remember Groomers have the right of way.  When you see them coming please pull off the trail and let them by.  if you are behind a groomer please don’t thrash the trail and they will let you by as soon as it’s safe.  They know you are back there.

February Newsletter

As I type this we are piling up our first real snow of the season.  Our trails have been closed for a while but the base was mostly intact.  The new snow this week will make the trails very nice.  Keep an eye on our website in the trail conditions and forum pages for the latest on conditions and events.  Please register for our Discussion Forum if you haven’t already to provide trail conditions to your fellow club members and feedback to the club.  It’s a great place to share your ideas on how to improve the club.  Also please visit our Business Sponsors Page and support those who support our club.

Trail Conditions
With the new snow we anticipate the trail conditions will be what we have come to expect over the past few years. We will be planning on getting the groomers out Wednesday night. Anyone that has the day off Wednesday should see some incredible powder conditions before then. The more traffic during the day the better we’ll be able to groom and pack it in. Breaking trails with the drag and deep snow can be challenging.

If the forecast pans out we’ll have a lot of snow for his weekend and hopefully we’ll be able to keep up and get it packed by Friday night. If not bear with us and enjoy the snow. Saturday could see some serious bumps if the temperatures stay in the 30’s but we’ll do what we can to keep them down. Expect to see groomers out during the day every day from Wednesday to Sunday so be aware and with deep snow you must get out of the groomers way.

A few things to look out for at open streams as it’s been pretty warm for the last 10 days, downed trees as the storm is bringing heavy wet snow and high winds, and active logging on the north leg of S83 and the woods section of S81.

The trail to Lake Desolation should be good finally and Tinney’s really needs your business after such a slow February.

Finally, there are numerous reports of open water and large pressure ridges on the Great Sacandaga Lake at this time. Add in the weight of up to 2 feet of heavy wet snow the lake is going to have many hazards so please be careful. Reports from Sacandaga Club say that the Turner Road Trailhead has a huge amount of open water and is not safe. The Richter’s trail head should be ok. The are reports of open water by Sinclair point as well so make sure to give it a very wide turn.

Spring Cash Bash is Back
We will be holding our Spring Cash Bash again this year. John Jones is organizing it once again and it will be held at Sam’s Glad Rag Saloon in Corinth on April 10th. There will be a hot buffet, beer on tap, and a live band (TBD). Of course there will be the huge cash drawings (1st: $3000, 2nd: $1000, 3rd: $500, 4th: $250, 5th: $150, 6th: $100). Tickets are a $100 donation to the club and only 100 will be sold. Two people per ticket. Call John Jones at (518) 469-2955 to get your ticket today. See the Website for more information.

Parking areas
Please use some common sense in the parking areas while it is snowing. The snowplows still take priority and some lots may not be plowed. They do not appreciate people parking on the side of the road while it’s actively snowing as it makes plowing more difficult. Also remember that the Groomers need to be able to come out into the lots to turn around (especially Wells road and County Route 10 lots).

Trails are…ridable, but not very good

I did a scouting run today after the snow and it turns out that most of the trails saw less than 2″ of snow. The ice base is intact and there is cooling now. The main trails are bumpy and the carbides were clacking away the whole ride.

If you want to scratch the itch go ahead but don’t expect a great ride. be careful as there are rocks poking out in places and it’s solid ice hiding under a little packed snow.

Hopefully we’ll get something out of a storm on Tuesday.

Trails Closed

Rain and warm temperatures have destroyed what we had and we’ll be starting over this week. Hopefully the cold will come in and refreeze everything and we’ll get some more snow to reopen them soon.

Keep checking back for any reports.

Update from ken 1/27:
Well I took a damage assessment mission yesterday afternoon and I saw some good and bad. I only have a minute but here are a couple of notes. The good is there is still a pretty deep snow pack in many spots but it is a rock solid concrete like surface. The groomer and drag would not even penetrate. The center of the seasonal road trails are shot in many spots…see pics. Anywhere there is a rock, it is poking out. Anywhere there is water that crosses the trail, it has washed away the snow and is bare with an ice shelf on both sides. Once we get snow, I can fill them in with the groomer. There are many limbs and branches down from the intense wind. There may be trees down too but I did not get to the entire trail system. The standing water has frozen up pretty quick and will help with a smooth trail once snow falls over it. The trails are not bumpy as we were in smooth condition going into the rain. There are some high corners and bumpy corners but where there is snow, it will be a killer base. Secondary trails are shot. It is not all bad but the bottom line is trails are not safe to ride until we get more snow and we work our groomer magic again. If you see old man winter, tell him to get to work and deliver us the white gold.

Friday night 1/22

Rode all the trails tonight. They are in great condition with some rocks poking out and dips around. The Groomers have been working hard since wednesday and have got everything real nice and the cold tonight set it up rock hard.

The main trails are wide flat and fast. The woods trails are flat with occasional dips and rocks so use caution. The trail to Lake desolation is in great shape for the first 3/4 then it get bumpy and thin since we don’t have enough snow to get the groomers all the way to the lake. Still better than riding the road in my opinion.

Get out and enjoy saturday because sunday and mondayare goingto close them down for sure until we get another snow storm.
